WELCOME TO THE NORTHWEST HOLIDAY CLASSIC!

The coaching staff, boosters and students of the Northwest High School Speech and Debate Team cordially invite you to the 2nd Annual Northwest Holiday Classic Tournament. This year’s tournament will be held Friday, December 20nd, 2024. Because this tournament falls at the start of the Holiday Break, we will have a quick 3 round tournament on Friday..  All events will be offered in-person.

ARRIVAL

The school will be open at 3:00PM. When you arrive, students can gather in the commons. Judges should gather in the Main Gym.  Head Coaches should report to TAB (Room 214) for registration.  Parent and student guides will be on site to assist with navigation of the buildings.

Please drop off students at the main entrance (Door A) at each respective building as we will not be providing transportation between buildings.  Buses can park at the rear of the High School and at the Intermediate School (to the right of the High School).

REGISTRATION FOR BOTH BUILDINGS WILL BE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL TAB ROOM (Room 214). TAB is located on the 2nd floor in the far corner of the building.

LOCATIONS

We will be utilizing two buildings for competition. Northwest Local Schools sits on one campus with the High School nearest the road and the Middle School on top of the hill just past the High School on the left. The Middle School and High School share a driveway and the distance between them is easily walkable.  Northwest will not be providing shuttles between buildings for this tournament. If Middle School competition is offered, we will utilize a 3rd building (Stinson Intermediate School). Stinson is located on the campus at the top of the driveway to the right of the High School.

JUDGING:

  • Find a judging manual with information on judging speech here. This manual includes event-specific information and an explanation on how to decide how to rank the round. Note: You’ll notice information on events that are not included in most Ohio competitions. For clarification, we are offering Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, United States Extemp, International Extemp and Original Oratory. Due to entry sizes for middle school, we are running a combined Middle School Speech category where students in Declamation and Interpretation compete against each other.

  • Find a judging manual with information on PF, LD, and Policy here. This manual includes a brief description of the categories, a breakdown of speech times, and an explanation on how to decide the winner.

  • Find a judging manual for Congress here. This manual includes a description on how to accurately score speeches and judge presiding officers.

  • Ballot Criteria here. Judges can copy and paste the judges evaluation criteria from the OSDA into the Speechwire ballot to provide feedback
