Hired Judges
Although I’ve judged for <2 years most of my background comes from first-hand experience competing in PF throughout high school. I’ve judged Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu, PF, and many speech events.
In PF I would like for any technical language or niche abbreviations to be clarified early on in the debate. A strong debater will balance an engaged rhetoric with relevant facts to provide concise delivery. I appreciate taglines, and clear reaffirmation of main points, even during a cross ex.- this will help me to maintain a flow. When it comes to delivery and speaking fast make sure to maintain clarity- I do not mind spreading so long as I can follow along, but it is not preferred, a conversational tone can be just as effective. An argument is only as compelling as the debater- I pay a lot attention to cross examinations. Habitual interruptions and ad hominem attacks to your opponent can count against you. We are here to debate the topic not each other, please respect your peers.
In previous debate tournaments I found it persuasive when debaters rebuilt their arguments and reaffirmed their ability to do so while still upholding their initial claims. Previously I didn’t prefer spreading, but if done clearly and concisely I believe it to be a very useful tactic within PF. The winning team will deliver, expand upon their well-supported and thoroughly prepared arguments while breaking down inconsistencies/flaws in the opponent’s arguments
