The 18th Annual Lafayette College OCHOIE Tournament

October 12-13, 2024 – Easton, Pennsylvania

Lafayette_FORENSICS_A

You are invited to the 18th installment of our fall tournament, on Saturday and Sunday October 12-13, 2024.

Our goal is to do more than run a fantastic tournament…. We want to create a memorable experience!

Wellness needs to be front and center. We want our tournament to be about more than the competition. So Lafayette will feature some new (and old) ideas. Starting with…

  • IPDA Debate

  • All NFA speech events

  • Free lunch to be provided both days

  • A crayon coloring contest with the coveted Crayola plushie award

  • A fully stocked judge’s lounge

  • A relaxed & old school 2 day / 3 round tournament so we can finish a little earlier at night, start a little later each morning, and ALL competitors can get lots of rounds and ballots

  • A made to order omelet bar / breakfast for coaches on Sunday morning

  • Top Novice awards

  • OBNOXIOUSLY large trophies (including the traveling team belt! Congratulations to James Madison University for winning it last year!)

The tournament will be in-person and use speechwire.com for registration, tabulation, and e-ballots. Every competitor and judge must have a speechwire.com account at the time of registration that is correctly linked to their school’s account.

We are making a very serious effort to provide qualified hired judges to work the tournament.  Several Lafayette alums and former competitors in the area have already committed to judging at the tournament

Every effort will be made to make this an enjoyable experience for all of those involved.  The tournament schedule is built so that at the very least, the tournament will run on time and hopefully run ahead of schedule.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask by e-mailing the tournament director at plackeh@lafayette.edu.

Sincerely,

Scott Placke Alexis Hughes Senior Director of Forensic Activities Assistant Director of Forensics

Lafayette College Lafayette College

Non-Discrimination Policy

Lafayette College Forensics does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender identity/expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all competitors, judges, and visitors. If you witness or experience any form of discrimination, please notify the tournament director, Scott Placke,, so that we can assist you.

Accessibility

If any of your competitors and/or judges require special needs, please inform us so that we may make the necessary arrangements.

COVID Mitigation Policy

We will have masks available on site. Competition protocols are still under development and will be announced at a later date.

Tournament Rules and Notes

Debate Tabulation.  Unless size of the field dictates otherwise, the first two rounds will be random, and the rest of the rounds will be paired high-high within brackets (odd numbered rounds) and high-low within brackets (even numbered rounds).  Pairing methodology is subject to change, but is not confidential, you may always ask the tournament director which pairing methodology is used for a given round.

Elimination Rounds.  Students will be seeded in the appropriate elimination round using the following criteria: (1) wins; (2) opposition wins; (3) adjusted points; (4) double adjusted points; (5) total points.  Brackets will not be broken in elimination rounds.

Schedule. All rounds will be scheduled in the Eastern Time Zone.

IPDA Debate

The OchoIE will be offering IPDA debate.

Debaters will be presented with five resolutions. Both debaters will alternatively strike one resolution each, starting with the negative. The 30-minute preparation period begins at the first negative strike. We will follow the time constraints set forth by the IPDA: 5-2-6-2-3-5-3.

During prep time, students are allowed to access any prepared material and/or electronic materials. This includes access to the Internet. In addition, students are allowed to prep with other students, but NOT COACHES.

All preliminary rounds will be randomly preset. Brackets will NOT be broken in elimination rounds.

There will be a designated room for topic draw. Students MUST report there ON TIME for draw! IPDA will most likely be flighted so students should note which flight they are. Further info can be found at www.ipdadebate.info

Individual Events

Ethics. Individual Events will conform to the NFA bylaws and competitors will be expected to adhere to the NFA Code of Ethics. Students should not enter material that has been used in competition prior to September 1, 2024.

Cross-Entering. Students may enter up to two events per flight but are restricted to no more than two duo entries. Students cross-entered in Extemp will speak as early as possible. Students in IPDA may enter Flight C with no restrictions. IPDA competitors may not cross enter in flights A and B.

Flights.

Flight A - ADS, CA, DI, POE

Flight B - IMP, INF, PRO

Flight C - DUO, EXT, PERS, POI

Judging

We want your judges!  We want to hire judges for flexibility, not to make ends meet. If you plan on having more than TWO uncovered debaters and/or more than 12 uncovered IE slots, please contact us ahead of time to make sure we have the hired judges to accommodate you.  All judges will be obligated through quarterfinals.  We will ask you to stay through semifinals if we are hurting for clean/eligible judges.

Depending on tournament needs, judges can be used for IE or debate regardless of entries.

Entry Deadline

Teams must be entered and entries must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7. We need to make this deadline a little earlier than usual so that we can give our food service people accurate numbers for the lunches (Saturday and Sunday) and the breakfast (Sunday). Please give us the most accurate head count (students + judges) that you can. You can adjust your actual entries until 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9.

Awards

We are providing trophies. More like TROPHIES. They will be nice and big. It’s been too long since you’ve had to figure out how to play van tetris on the way home, get ready. If there’s something happening during the tournament that could have an award it WILL have an award.

Some Lafayette competitors will be competing in the tournament and will be eligible for awards and elimination round participation.  Lafayette will not be eligible for Team Sweepstakes.

Food

We will provide food on site for both lunch meals and a breakfast (Continental for students and a complete spread with a made to order OMELET BAR) on Sunday.  We hope you will join us!  We will catch up with you after the entry deadline to take your lunch food numbers.

Judge’s Lounge

A well stocked Judge’s Lounge is a key component to tournament hospitality. We want ours to be hopping! Expect some fun twists.

Tab Staff

Scott Placke (plackeh@lafayette.edu) will be the tournament director.  Additional staff added as needed.

Fees

We will accept check and cash payments. Fees must be fully paid by the time of registration. A W-9 is available upon request.  Checks should be made out to “Lafayette College” and may (if desired) be mailed prior to the tournament to:

Scott Placke

30 South College Drive

Jenks Hall, Room G6

If your team’s funds are tight and you are having trouble covering entry fees, please contact the tournament director. Something can be worked out. We’d rather have your school than your money.
