Dear Speech Coach and Team:
Moberly High School is thrilled to invite your team to our tournament on Saturday, February 15, 2025. This tournament is for 9th-12th graders. Since this is our first tournament since 2019, we will only be hosting IE events.
We will be using SpeechWire Tournament services and entries for the tournament should be entered online at https://www.speechwire.com . Tournament: Moberly High School Invitational.
We will be offering the following events: Prose, Poetry, Humorous, Dramatic, Storytelling, DUO, Informative, Oratory, Extemp (Combined), and Radio Speaking. Individual Events will have two preliminary rounds, breaking to semifinals and finals.
Please note that each event will follow the current MSHSAA guidelines. Laptops and all other electronic devices are permitted. However, Moberly does not guarantee power sources. Students using electronic devices in classrooms may not unplug any electronic device in order to utilize an electrical outlet.
Each school must provide at least 1 judge per 8 entries. If you request extra entries, please plan on bringing judges to cover your extra entries. Entry fees is $10.00 per event.
The entry deadline is Friday, February 7, 2025 at 3:00 PM. Entries will be guaranteed three per event, with wait-listed entries being granted on a first come, first served basis. The deadline for changes is Monday, February 10, 2025 at 3:00 PM. After this date/time all drops will still have the entry fee.

Saturday, February 15th
7:00-7:30 AM: Registration in the Spartan Way- Buses unload at the main entrance (east, parallel to Gratz Brown Rd)
7:30 AM: Judges meeting in Professional Development Room (All window room by library).
7:30 AM: Extemp Draw Round 1
8:00 AM: Round 1
9:30 AM: Extemp Draw Round 2
10:00 AM: Round 2
12:00 PM: Extemp Draw Semi-Finals
12:30 PM: Semi-Finals
2:00 PM: Extemp Draw Finals
2:30 PM: Finals
4:00 PM: Awards
General Rules
1. A student may be entered in a maximum of three events.
2. Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 sweepstake schools, with medals being awarded to the top 6 places in Individual Events.
3. Entry fees are $10 per entry. Schools are financially responsible for all entry fees as of 3:00 PM, Friday, 2/17/2025.
4. All MSHSAA and Moberly High School policies will be in effect, competitor misconduct (smoking, harassment, assault, vandalism, etc) could result in disqualification.
5. A concession stand for competitors will be open, as well as a hospitality room for adults. Please have students keep food and drink in the Spartan Way/Cafenasium.
6. Tab Room will be in the 2nd classroom inside the library and open throughout the tournament. Coaches will also have access to view standings on SpeechWire.
AWARDS
1. 6 competitors in each event will advance to finals
2. Medals will be awarded to 1st-6th place
3. Sweepstakes awards will be presented to the Top 3 Schools.
SWEEPSTAKES
2 pts for advancing to semis and finals
5 pts for 3rd place
10 pts for 2nd place
15 pts for 1st place
Individual Events Rules:
1. All MSHSAA events will follow MSHSAA rules.
2. U.S. & International Extemp: Question topics will be current events on national and international issues. Time limit will be 7 minutes.
3. Original Oratory: The speech must be written by the student. It must be memorized. Time limit is 10 minutes. Not more than 150 words may be a direct quotation.
4. Humorous and Dramatic Interp: Selections must be memorized and possess literary merit. Time limit is 10 minutes.
5. DUO Interp: Selections must be memorized and possess literary merit. Selections may be from any appropriate novel, play, or short story. Time limit-10 minutes. Movement is limited and students must have offstage focus.
6. Duet Acting: Selections must be memorized and possess literary merit. Selections may be from any appropriate novel, play, or short story. Time limit-10 minutes.
7. Storytelling: Selections must be published, copyrighted, printed story originally intended for children. No costumes or props are to be used. The story should be well enough in mind to share it adequately
8. Radio Speaking: Prepare and present a script which contains news, weather, and sports. Must use a copy no more than 24 hours old - as of the tournament's first round-to prepare the script. Cannot use commercials and cannot portray multiple characters.
9. Informative: The speech must be written by the student. It must be memorized. Time limit is 10 minutes. The purpose of the speech is for the audience to gain understanding and/or knowledge of a topic. No more than 150 words may be direct quotations.
10. Prose and Poetry Reading: Maximum 8 minutes. The literature must be interpreted (read) from the script, which should be taken from a published source of good quality. Prose selections should not be more than 50 percent dialogue.
