The forensics team at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is pleased to invite you to the Winterfest 2024! This year we have an exciting adjustment to the schedule!
Saturday’s tournament honors the past efforts of Dr. Edna Sorber, the former forensics director at UW-Whitewater who brought the 1967 Pi Kappa Delta National Convention to the UW-Whitewater campus. Enclosed in this invitation are additional details including registration deadlines, tournament schedule, etc. We look forward to seeing you in December! REGISTRATION
Students may enter up to 6 events TOTAL. Students may enter two duos (with different partners) but this will count as two events.
There are no limits on the number of entries a team can enter in any event, but teams entering large numbers in certain events may anticipate “competing” against teammates in preliminary rounds.
Please denote your novices when registering. We will recognize the top novice in each category at awards. Novices are defined as anyone in their first year (2 semesters) of collegiate competition. FEES/JUDGES for Alumni Classic and Sorber Alumni Classic Fees

Main St. 424 Heide Hall Whitewater, WI 53190 LOCATION/PARKING INFORMATION FOR SATURDAY & SUNDAY We will again be in Heide Hall this year for Saturday and Sunday. Parking is free on weekends in non-restricted spaces. You may park on Prairie street immediately in-front of the building, or in Lot 12 to the south of the building. Both Heide and Lot 12 should come up in navigation apps. Please note, Lot 13 immediately north of the building is restricted, and parking there may result in being ticked/booted/towed. SORBER EXTEMP Our tournament is known for using less traditional prompts for extemp to challenge students in research and analysis. Returning again this year, sports extemp! The following schema will be used for Saturday. We will return to more traditional prompts for Sunday. Round 1: Single Cat Ladies - questions surrounding gender & LGBTQ+ Round 2: Sports Extemp Final: Wisconsin & City of Whitewater issues SORBER IMPROMPTU: Round 1: question Round 2: single word Final: ethical dilemma ALUMNI CLASSIC LIMITED PREPARATION Prompts will be released Friday November 29 in the afternoon. 1 video per event. Impromptu: proverb or quotation will be used, student will get a choice from 2 prompts Extemp: pick from 3 questions, one will be domestic, one international and one economic *Please include Impromptu prep, but not extemp prep in the video HONORS Awards will be given for the in-person Edna Sorber, but not the Alumni Classic. The qualification is the prize.
Final Round: 1st (12 pts), 2nd (10 pts), 3rd (8 pts.), 4th (6 pts), 5th (4 pts), 6th (2 pts), remaining finalists 1 pt. Each.
Novices: Please denote your novices when registering. We will recognize the top novice in each event at awards. Novices are defined as anyone in their first year of collegiate competition. INDIVIDUAL SWEEPSTAKES Students are entered into individual sweepstakes regardless of the number of events entered or the categories entered. The top three individual speakers (based on total points earned in final rounds combined) will be honored at the awards ceremony. Tiebreakers: 1) Highest total points, 2) Highest number of 1st-place awards in finals, 2nd-place, etc., 3) Highest total of events advancing to finals., 4) Lowest average of ranks from prelims. TEAM SWEEPSTAKES TIE-BREAKERS If teams are tied after calculating total team points, team tie-breakers will run as follows: 1) Highest total points, 2) Number of firsts in finals, 3) Number of finals, 4)Number of seconds in finals, then thirds, then fourths HOST INFORMATION UW-W Student Competitors The UW-Whitewater forensic team will not enter students in official AFA Events on Saturday, unless needed to meet a minimum team threshold for AFA or NFA qualifications. In such case, students in their first year of college forensics will be entered, but not considered novices. UWW students will be entered in the asynchronous tournament and with MAFL on Sunday. Local Happenings Friday December 6 will be Whitewater’s holiday season kickoff. There will be a parade through downtown, holiday market, tree lighting, and walk-able light display. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTAs we gather here for the Edna Sorber Tournament, we acknowledge that the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater exists today on the traditional lands of many Native people. While this State institution has a rich history, for thousands of years, this region, and these lands, were home to diverse Native peoples. In the knowledge and understanding of this history, we acknowledge that the land on which the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater now exists was and remains the historic and traditional territory of many Native peoples. The Ho-Chunk grew corn and gathered a living from these lands. The Potawatomi, then closely related to the Ojibwa and Odawa peoples, called this land home as well. We welcome and are honored, by the responsibility to be good stewards of these lands and good neighbors to all Wisconsin Indigenous populations. In concert with the Native American Cultural Awareness Association, Native Students, with faculty and staff, the University continues to explore durable and meaningful ways of acknowledging our relationship.
