Dear Speech Coach,

Welcome to the Waubonsie Valley High School’s tournament, “The Reel Thing!” We look forward to seeing you on January 11, 2025. This year we are back to hosting a full tournament, finals and all!

Please note the following schedule:

Tournament schedule January 11, 2025

7:00 AM - Registration begins

7:45 AM - Radio prep

8:00 AM - Extemp prep

8:30 AM - First Round (All Events)
 

10:15 AM - Second Round (All Events)
 

*Extemp & Radio: Please remind your students to use script from round 1 for the second & third round

11:30 AM - Third Round (All Events)

*Lunch will be available for purchase from 10:30 - 1:00; snacks will be available throughout the day.

1:30 PM - Radio Final Round Prep

1:45 PM - Extemp Final Round prep

2:15 PM - Final Round – All Events

4:00 PM - Awards in the Cafeteria
 

Important Information:

WILL YOU ATTEND? Please note whether or not you will attend as soon as possible. Also, please note the number of entries you intend to have, too. The number of judges you will need to provide is dependent on the number of entries you have.  

PAYMENT: Please send a check (or bring it the day of the tournament) made out to Waubonsie Valley High School (Attention: Natalie Schaefers) for the following amounts:

Up to 1 entry per event (1-14) – $125 (and 3 judges)

Up to 2 entries per event (15-28) - $150 (and 4 judges)

Up to 3 entries per event (29-42) - $200 (and 5 judges) ***THIS IS THE DEFAULT OPTION (We will give additional entries to schools that offer us the same)***

Up to 4 entries per event (43- 56) - $250 (and 6 judges)

JUDGING: Judging needs are listed above. Radio Speaking judges will need to time their own rounds, so be sure to bring your own stopwatches. All judges must wait for all finals’ assignments to be posted before leaving. Even if there are drops, you are still required to provide the judges from the original confirmed entry.

PREP EVENTS:  Please note and remind the students that Extemp will prep *twice* for the prelims and once again for finals. Radio will prep once for prelims and once for finals.

FINAL ROUNDS: Rank alone will be used to advance individuals to finals. Fewer than 6 may be advanced to keep the final round below nine participants. Ties in final rounds will not be broken. Team trophies will be awarded to the top 3 teams in the sweepstakes.

CONFIRMATION OF FINAL NUMBERS: Please confirm final numbers by Friday, January 10th at noon, checking each event individually in SpeechWire. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ADDED AFTER THIS TIME. Once the tournament is scheduled after Friday’s confirmation, rounds will NOT be balanced because of drops. JUDGING NUMBERS WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY DROPS MADE AFTER THIS TIME.  After Friday, you are still required to bring the number of judges from original confirmation.
