Colleagues and friends,

Dutchess Community College, the Dutchess Speech and Debate Coalition, and SNAFU are pleased to invite you to the Dutchess Community College Invitational tournament on October 26th, 2024. The tournament will be held as a swing with SNAFU #1 being held on October 27th

The invitational will feature all 11 AFA-NST events alongside IPDA Debate on both days. Students may not double enter in speech and debate events. All points and tabulations will be conducted according to AFA-NST procedures. Two preliminary rounds of individual events will be followed by finals consisting of the top six contestants in each event. We will offer an Individual Speaker Award to the top three individuals who enter in at least four events in two genres of forensics. Sweepstakes awards will be given to the top three schools.

Below, please find all of the information you will need to enter the tournament. Should you have any questions, please contact Margeaux Lippman at Margeaux.Lippman@sunydutchess.edu or 845-431-8591.

The Hudson Valley is a bit of a judge desert.

Each judge can cover 6 slots or 2 debaters. Judges will be used in both IE and IPDA pools unless otherwise noted. All judges are obligated for one round past their students’ elimination. Failure of a judge to pick up their ballots will result in their students being ineligible for elimination rounds.

Rules:

We will use the current standing event definitions and time limits as published by the American Forensics Association.  We will offer a semi-final round for any event with 40 or more entries competing in both preliminary rounds of competition.

IPDA topic strike will occur in room – there will be no central strike.

Awards:

Awards will be given to all elimination round competitors in all events. IPDA will feature two elimination rounds. Debaters reaching the first elimination round receive Bronze. The winners of the second elimination round will receive Gold while the eliminated teams will receive Silver.

Individual events sweepstakes points will be awarded as follows: 12 points for first place, 10 points for second, 8 points for third, 7 points for fourth, 5 points for fifth, and 3 points for sixth. In debate, sweepstakes points will be awarded as follows: 5 points for each prelim win, 2 points for reaching Bronze, 2 points for reaching Gold.

Top speakers and schools will be recognized. Students must be entered in four events to be eligible for individual sweeps.

Accommodations:

There is no tournament hotel, but the following hotels are available (in no particular order) and are a quick drive to the College.

              Holiday Inn Express: 2750 South Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 473-1151

              Courtyard: 2641 South Rd #9, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 485-6336

              Hampton Inn: 2361 South Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 463-7500

              Hyatt Place: 2165 South Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 632-3100

              Homewood Suites: 900 Thomas Watson Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 462-0030

              Residence Inn: 2525 South Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 463-4343

Lunch:

There are no real options within walking distance of the College. DoorDash and UberEats do deliver to campus with varied success depending on who the individual driver is.

That said, the following local options may deliver or are a quick pickup. I would suggest calling them before you come to PKNY to see if they will deliver to campus.

              Giacomo’s Pizza: 3434 North Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12533 • (845) 452-5550

Touch of Naples Pizza: 417 Violet Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 473-5744

              Shelly’s Deli: 481 Violet Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 471-3663

              Rossi’s Deli: 45 S. Clover St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 471-0654

Director’s Note: Rossi’s is pricy, but they make the kind of sandwiches that dreams are made of – the kind of sandwiches that I’ve brought on a roadtrip or on an airplane for friends who have moved out of the Hudson Valley. Was recently a TikTok sensation for any of you looking for clout with the teenagers in your life.

              Falafel Town: 260 North Rd, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 433-0123

              Palace Diner: 194 Washington St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 473-1576

              Chipotle: 15 Winslow Gate Rd Unit 2, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 • (845) 224-3468

Director’s Note: This may be the world’s absolute slowest Chipotle. They have truly earned their 2.1 star rating on Google. That said, ordering early and going to go pick it up will yield much better results than delivery service.

Various fast food joints of your choosing are within a ten minute drive of campus.
