Tournament Guidelines

Registration will take place on speechwire.com. Preliminary entry is due by Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Drops or changes can be made until Thursday, December 5, 2024, any drops or changes after this time will incur fees.

Students should not enter material that has been used in competition before September 1, 2024.

We will be using paper ballots at this tournament; our school is currently switching over computer servers and our internet has been going out quite often. With this, we feel like it would be safer to do paper ballots in hopes of not weighing down the internet we have for those needing it for prep. IT is on it and is working at fixing all the issues before our tournament, but we all know things can pop up.

Registration/Check- in for the tournament will be in the Academic Commons (AC), there will be a table in the lobby that will also serve as ballot table throughout the weekend.

Parking: Please park in either the parking lot outside the Academic Commons or outside the McMahon Centennial Complex. Both parking lots are close to all activities for the weekend. You will need a parking pass for each vehicle, which can be found at the registration table/ballot table.

Individual Events Guidelines

AFA-NIET rules will be followed in the participation and tabbing of all individual events.

Students may enter a maximum of three events per pattern.

The patterns are:

Pattern A: DI, EXT, PER, POE, PRO

Pattern B: ADS, CA, DUO, IMP, INF, POI

Debate IPDA Guidelines

  • There will be 6 prelim rounds with up to three possible elim rounds, based on the number of entries.
  • Debaters will be given 30 minutes of preparation time following the topic draw.
  • Debaters are to be in their competition rooms at the end of prep time and a late forfeiture rule will be enforced.
  • Students are not to be late to draw, penalties may occur.
  • We strongly encourage debaters to not enter EXT on Saturday.
  • Note: Two Elimination rounds will be held on Saturday, debaters should be aware that entering in IE’s and Debate will be tight, and it will leave a very limited lunch.
  • Debate divisions will be collapsed if there are too few entries in divisions.
  • We offer three debate divisions, Novice, JV, and Varsity. Please make sure your debaters are in the correct division.

Tournament Sizing

  • Hosting Schools reserve the right to enter students into the tournament to compete.
  • Any events with 8 or less students will go straight to auto finals.
  • Depending on tournament size, the schedule may change and rounds may be collapsed. If we are able we will run one finals round. Anytime we can get you out earlier we will!
  • The tournament director reserves the right to limit the number of entries from a school, and to balance rounds to accommodate judging obligations from schools with large entries.

Food

There is limited food on campus. (They will only be open on Friday). There is a large amount of food locations within blocks of the campus, and a Subway located within walking distance. Feel free to ask for recommendations and we will be providing a list of locations prior to the tournament.

Fees

Individual Events: $10 (one judge covers 8 slots)

IPDA: $40 (one judge covers 2 debaters)

Miscellaneous Fees

Uncovered IE entries: Fee + $10

Uncovered IPDA entries: Fee + $40

IE Drops: Fee + $20

IPDA Drops: Fee + $20

Payment by cash, check, or PO is expected at registration. Teams that do not pay at registration will not be able to compete in the tournament.

Judging

All IE judges are expected to be available for final rounds. Debate judges are expected to be available for one round past when their teams are eliminated.

We would much rather have your judges than your money!! Please try to cover your judges as best as possible. It can be tricky to find judges here. We also will pay hired judges if you have extra judges that want to join us for the weekend.

A judge lounge will be provided for all judges, coaches, and tournament staff. This room is off limits to competitors. Refreshments will be provided during all days of competition, including a lite lunch daily.

WIFI/Internet Access

Please use the CUGuest WIFI if you are in need of open WIFI. This WIFI is the best free WIFI on campus, it does not require a login. However, we do recommend testing the WIFI and making sure you connect before your prep time/Draw time.

Awards

All Individual Events finalists and debate elimination round contestants will receive awards.

For each IE tournament, sweepstakes awards will be given to the top 3 schools and top 3 quadrathlon speakers.

The Top Novice competitor in each individual event will also be recognized.

Quadrathlon eligibility requires students to compete in three events and IPDA, which must include at least one interpretation event (DI, DUO, POE, POI, PRO) and one public address event (ADS, CA, INF, PER, EXT, IMP).

In debate, the top 3 speakers in each division of IPDA will receive awards. The top 3 debate schools will also win awards.

The top 3 overall schools in combined IE and debate during the swing will also be recognized, as well as, the top community college and top program from Oklahoma. To calculate overall team awards, the percentage of total points earned in IE’s plus the percentage of total points earned in debate will be utilized as the determining factor in ranking these programs.
