This is a Middle/High School tournament in Fort Walton Beach.

You are cordially invited to the NorthFlorida Civics & Debate Initiative No Prep Scrimmage to be held September 28th, 2024 at Fort Walton Beach High School,  400 Hollywood Blvd., Fort Walton Beach, FL. 32548. This tournament will be live and in person.

This NW-FCDI Tournament offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. All schools are welcome to compete in this tournament.

All competitors will compete in 3 rounds of a prearranged scheduleThis tournament WILL/WILL NOT include advancement rounds (Octo finals, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals).

The tournament will begin at 7:00am Central time. We hope to finish awards by 1:30pm, but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event.

The full schedule can be found in the Schedule tab on the Speechwire registration page for the tournament.

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE TUESDAY, September 22,2024 at Midnight.

EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Middle School Champion Award in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.

No Double Entry.  If a coach submits the same student for two events, that student will be automatically disqualified for both events.

EVENTS INCLUDE:

  • EXTEMPORANEOUS DEBATE (EXD)
  • IMPROMPTU SPEAKING (IMP)

Observers are allowed but must be registered.

Topics: Topics for Limited Prep events are not released until the day of competition before each round.
Impromptu- a mix of wisdom, proverbs, or predictions.
This event will be altered slightly and topics will be decided via fortune cookies. Instead of 3 topics to choose from, they will receive just 1 cookie each round. Whatever comes out of their cookie is theirs to agree with, disagree with, talk about the deeper concepts of, or twist to link to a new and creative speech topic- as per impromptu rules.
Extemporaneous Debate- Social and Domestic Policy
There will be no alterations to the event itself here, but the topics will be lighter, high interest topics rather than deeply connected to current events as this is a workshop style competition we are using to introduce the students to their events. Sides will be assigned at the same time as topics are introduced.

NOTE: Students who compete in debate events argue both sides of an issue. Academic debate is an intellectual activity and is not about personal advocacy.

JUDGES:  FCDI JUDGING REQUIREMENTS

Because tournaments rely on volunteer judges, recruiting and training judges is vital. The FCDI

requires teams provide judges proportional to the number of students they have registered for

a given tournament.

The FCDI divides judges into two types: speech and debate. Speech judges can judge all speech events (Legislative Debate is included in speech). Debate judges can judge all debate events. Should the tournament be short judges in a specific type, judges may have to take a ballot in an event type they were not signed up in.

For every two debate entries (individuals or teams), one debate judge must be registered.

For every five speech entries (including Legislative Debate), one speech judge must be registered.

Teams who do not have the required number of judges will incur a fee of $10.00 per judge short and/or may have their competitors dropped from the tournament.

Additional speech, debate and judging resources can be found HERE.

Adults and coaches may judge any division. FCDI alumni and qualified varsity students may judge the middle school and novice divisions. Judges need to be trained. It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.

At every FCDI tournament, a team member will present a judge orientation, event overview and answer any final questions judges may have. On-site judge training will always be available to any judge that needs assistance one hour before the tournament begins.

If a judge misses a round, other than in the case of an emergency, the team they are representing will be charged a $100.00 missed round fee.

CONCESSIONS: Concessions (pizza, snacks, drinks, etc.) will be available for purchase with cash only.

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES PERMITTED.

COACHES: Coaches must be available for the duration of the tournament.

FEES: FCDI member schools pay no fees. Non-FCDI schools pay $5.00/student.
