LA PORTE HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE TOURNAMENT
Messrs. Edward Lake and Joe Stewart, on behalf of the LPHS Speech and Debate Program, are delighted to cordially invite you to attend the La Porte High School Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

Registration will be from 7:15-8:25 AM Central Time.
We are hoping to start round 1 at 8:30 AM Central Time.
La Porte High School is located at 602 "F" St., La Porte, IN 46350.
EVENTS OFFERED AND DIVISIONS THEREOF:
Speech and Debate events will each be single-category. Debate events will be Varsity; Speech events will be Novice, thusly:

- Lincoln Douglas – Varsity
- Public Forum – Varsity
- Policy Debate – Varsity
- Congressional Debate – Varsity
- World School Debate – Open Division
- No Entry Caps
SPEECH:
- Broadcasting - Novice
- Declamation - Novice

- Extemporaneous (Domestic and International) - Novice
- Humor - Novice
- Impromptu - Novice
- Info - Novice
- Prose - Novice
- Poetry - Novice

- Programmed Oral Interpretation - Novice
- No entry caps
JUDGES:
Debate:
- We need 1 judge for every 2 entries in LD, PFD, Policy, and World School (or fraction thereof)
- Congressional Debate – 1 judge for every 5 congress entries (or fraction thereof)
Speech:
- We need 1 judge for every 5 entries in Speech events (or fraction thereof).
- As this is a Novice tournament for Speech competitors, students with at least 200 accumulated NSDA points are welcome to serve as judges.
MEALS:
- Lunchtime pizza, as well as various snack items, will be available for student purchase throughout the day.
- Meals and beverages for judges will be provided free of charge.
AWARDS:
We will have individual placings through 6th place for each event.
ROUNDS:
- 4 Rounds for all Speech events; no finals
- 4 Rounds for PFD and LD
- 4 Rounds of Policy and World School
- 2 Rounds for Congressional Debate

REGISTRATION:
- Please register via Speechwire.
- Competitor Entries are due no later than 11:59 PM on Monday, October 28.
- Judge Entries are due no later than 11:59 PM on Wednesday, October 30. Please only mark a judge clean if they are truly neutral (does not know any competitors...)
- Please notify Messrs. Lake and Stewart of parents who are judging and the name of their student(s) to ensure a lack of judging conflicts.
- Drops will be accepted without penalty – early notice is much appreciated!
ADDITIONAL DEBATE INFORMATION:
LaPorte HS Debate Tournament Topics November 2024
Public Forum Debate
Resolved: The United States should substantially reduce its military support of Taiwan.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Resolved: The United States ought to adopt a wealth tax.
Policy Forum Debate
Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly strengthen its protection of domestic intellectual property rights in copyrights, patents, and/or trademarks.
World Schools Debate
We will be having 2 different topics, of which neither is impromptu.
Rounds 1 & 2: This House Supports the repatriation of all cultural artifacts from foreign museums to their nation of origin.
Rounds 3 & 4: This House Believes that the discovery of microplastics in humans is the greatest threat to public health moving forward.
Congressional Debate –
We will be using the following topics from the ISSDA docket:
B/E 1 A Bill to Establish an AI Energy Tax
B/E 2 A Bill to Ban Pharmaceutical Drug Advertisements
SC 1 A Bill for an Efficient Secret Service
SC 2 A Resolution to Affirm the Right to Protest on College Campuses
FP 1 The Border Protection Act
FP 2 A Resolution to Restructure the United Nations Security Council
ADDITIONAL SPEECH INFORMATION:
Domestic and International Extemp will be combined. There will be separate prompt pools for Domestic and International competitors, but they will not be entered into separate divisions. Additionally, competitors in Extemporaneous speaking will draw only twice; they will speak on each topic for two rounds. (The goal is to offer as much practice as we can to Novice competitors this early in the season.)
As mentioned earlier, since this is the first in-person Speech Tournament of the year, we are offering NOVICE-ONLY competition in Speech events. Veteran student competitors who have accumulated at least 200 NSDA points are welcomed as judges.
Discussion Artifacts and Broadcasting Materials will be made available no later than Friday, October 25, 2024.
