Greetings esteemed contemporaries!

We are thrilled to invite you and your team to Maumee’s Annual Vanguard Classic, taking place on Saturday, November 2, 2024! Join us in celebrating the start of the season here in the Toledo District with a day of spirited competition.

All of this information and all future updates will be on this Live Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/175XVMJnhD_Jhli7bOW3RVgSYyGxSrCqT9bEFDOdTcYA/edit?usp=sharing

High School Round Structure:

  • 3 rounds for all individual events
  • 3 Student Congress sessions
  • 4 rounds of Lincoln-Douglas & Public Forum Debate
  • Double entries in IE are allowed with prior approval from the tournament host

***In addition to the standard OSDA events, we will also include Impromptu for free, providing an opportunity for students who may not feel ready to compete in their selected category to still gain experience and have fun while doing so! It could also be a less stressful way for experienced students to try double entering! Please note that judging requirements must still be met.***

Middle School Round Structure:

  • 3 rounds of all Middle School individual events

  • 2 rounds of MS Extemp Debate as Flight A

  • 2 rounds of MS Congress and MS Public Forum as Flight B

  • The flight structure allows MS students interested in debate events to explore two.

  • Double entries are allowed in individual events if one of the events is MS Extemp

Registration Fees:

  • Team base fee: $10.00
  • $5.00 per contestant per event
  • Please make checks payable to Maumee City Schools with the memo "Speech & Debate."

Deadlines:

  • Drops - Wednesday, October 30th, @ 11:59 PM.
  • Entries - Friday, November 1st, @ 5:00 PM (for exceptions, reach out to Steve asap)
  • Judges - Friday, November 1st @ 5:00 PM

Judge Requirements:

  • 1 judge for every 5 IE entries
  • 1 judge for every 2 debate entries
  • 1 judge for every 5 congress entries
  • All judges must have activated Speechwire accounts for tournament registration. Please register them with their email addresses and remind them to bring their own device for e-ballots.

Judge Hires:
If you have any extra judges available for hire, please let me know! To ensure a smooth tournament while allowing everyone to compete, we are more than happy to compensate teams for providing additional judges to cover other teams’ missing spots (That’s ideally why we have uncovered entry fees!). We can apply a credit toward your entry fees or arrange an alternative payment method—whatever works best for you. Just reach out, and we’ll discuss the details!

Uncovered Entry Fees:

  • $60 per missing judge
  • We will explore any and all options to avoid dropping students from the tournament. That said, please put in your best effort to find judges and we will put in equal effort to find any judges that you’re unable to!

Topics:

  • Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum topics (both high school and middle school) will follow the NSDA/OSDA selections for November.
  • High School Congress will use the OSDA docket set for November 2.
  • Middle School Congress will have the full November docket to choose from. That said, to ensure that there are enough speeches for each legislation, please fill out the following form (the results of which will be released in most follow-up emails with updated totals) https://forms.gle/A6p3HSc8PrjkdVz96
