You’re Invited

It is time to think about colder weather, namely “The Chill.”  As the coach of Chatfield, it is my honor to invite you to the Chatfield Chill on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024.  We will offer the following events in a do-as-much-as-we-can-each-round schedule: Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, Original Oratory, Poetry, POI, Informative, Duo Interp (ALL ASYNCHRONOUS) and Extemp (combined), LD, CX (no JV), and Public Forum Debate (ALL SYNCHRONOUS).   We will put as many events into each flight as possible.  (Rooms aren’t the issue, judges will be.) The rough schedule should be as follows:

7:30-8:00 Registration

7:00 Awards

If we have enough judges, we will run everything at once!  My dream is to be done by 5:00. (This dream has been done!)

General Rules

  1. Entry fees--$12.00 per individual entry, $20.00 per partner event entry

  1. Entry Deadline—Dec 4th @ 3:02 PM

  2. Scripts are not mandatory for any events (except POI), but may be used without forced consequences, except oratory and informative.

  3. Students may not double enter.  The Pentathlon is the exception.  Any non-pentathlete student who is  double-entered will be removed from all but one event.  The tournament director may be the one making the decision as to which event that will be if discovered late.

  4. Schools will be allowed a maximum of 5 entries per event at the original entry.  There may be more spots available after the entry deadline.

  5. Please provide 1 speech judge per 6 speech entries, and one judge per 2 debate entries.

  6. We will be using the following topics for debate.

    •          a. LD-Resolved: The United States ought to adopt a wealth tax.

    •          b. PF-Resolved: The United States should substantially reduce its military support of Taiwan.

    •          c. CX-Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly strengthen its protection of domestic intellectual property rights in copyrights, patents, and/or trademarks.

General Rules:

  • A responsible coach must be available via cell phone at all times during the tournament.

  • Competition is open to 9-12 grade students representing the school in which they are officially enrolled and doing so with the permission of their school administration and/or coaches.

  • We will use CHSAA rules in all events.

Judging:  Each school is responsible for providing judges to cover their entries.

  • We will be utilizing online ballots via SpeechWire - judges need to have their own devices so they can access their SpeechWire accounts and complete their ballots.

  • When signing up judges, put them in the “All” category, then block them from events that they are unable to judge.

  • Judges must be available for the three preliminary rounds and the final round--if you are dividing a judging requirement across multiple judges, please ensure there is judge coverage for the whole duration of the tournament.

  • One judge must be provided for every two debaters (or portion thereof).

  • One judge must be provided for every 5 events entries (or portion thereof).

  • Judges must be entered in Speechwire by Wednesday, December 4.

  • Judges are responsible for checking for ballots at the appropriate times. We will be auditing judge usage after the tournament and will assess judge fees for missing judges and for judges who miss ballots.

  • We all want tournaments to run quickly, and that is not possible if we do not have a solid judging pool--please do your best to ensure your judges are present for the duration of the tournament. We’d much rather have your judges than your money! If you are a new or rebuilding program with concerns about meeting your judge requirements, please reach out so we can work with you.

  • NOTE: We will not be compensating judges--we leave judge compensation to each team’s discretion.

We will not have concessions available for students.

Registration

We are going to use speechwire.com for tournament registration and tabulation this year.

Something Different (Please check as there are changes!)

THE PENTATHLON!!!!!  Some may know what this is, others don’t.  Any student will be allowed to compete in the Pentathlon.  That student competes in five events. They may do 5 asynchronous events or 4 asynchronous and 1 synchronous event.  (That’s right!  Debaters and extempers can finally do this!) If you aren’t exactly sure what a Pentathlon is, ask me.  Register them in each category, and then somehow let me know how many, which events, etc. later.  Each school is allowed one Pentathlon entry.  Any questions, here is how I can be contacted:

Judges

(It’s in italics, so this must be important!)

In order for remote tournaments to happen effectively, we need judges to be registered into speechwire.com as well as the kids.  If you have judges anywhere in the world willing to judge, they need to create an account on speechwire.com.  Once that is done, they can register themselves for the Chill if you give them the tournament info..

They need to be able to get updates, through either emails or texts, or both.  They also need a device on which to judge.  This can be a phone, a lap top, a tablet, etc.  As we have been paperless for three years, even before a massive pandemic, we should be ready for this.

Thanks again, and we hope to see you here.
