Welcome to the Indiana University Bloomington Holiday Bash Debate & Speech Tournament, co-sponsored by Indiana University Debate, O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Hamilton Lugar School, and The College of Arts and Sciences. The tournament will be held in-person on December 14th, 2024 on the campus of Indiana University: Ballantine Hall, 1020 E. Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington, IN 47405.
Schedule 6:00 Final Drop Deadline
1:30 - 2:30 Awards Registration & Drop Deadlines & Fines -- Entries are due by Wednesday, December 10, at 5:00 p.m. There is no cap on number of entries (assuming you provide enough judges) and no fee to enter. Late additions are discouraged but may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. Please use SpeechWire to make your own drops up until Sat. Dec. 14 at 6:00 a.m., after which you need to text/call Brian DeLong at 307-214-4189 and/or email debate.indiana@gmail.com. We will collect drop fees at the time of registration, so please bring a checkbook just in case.
Awards -- Ribbons will be awarded to the top ten places in each event (20 entries). Team plaques will be awarded to the top schools in both large and small divisions for Team Sweepstakes. Events -- We will be offering all 13 Indiana Middle School Speech & Debate Events, including IN MS Debate format. There will be 3 rounds of Speech, 4 rounds of Debate. See the current rules here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CLkJ7SuHV2fxnLNTmI_ae11cYdBGQfep3iutZtHkTIA/edit Debate -- MS Debate Resolution for 2024: Resolution: Electric Vehicles are a net positive. Discussion -- MS Discussion Theme Health Discussion prompt questions:
1) Health, Sugary foods and drinks b. Are high calory labels with health warnings sufficient? c. Are sugar alternatives better than the sugar they replace?
2) Health and Workplace a. Should employers be obligated to do more for health beyond workplace safety? b. Have wellness programs "worked?"
c. Which workplace environments are detrimental to the health of their workforce? a. Should we worry about microplastics and our health? b. How can climate change impact our health? c. Should cities be built to be more walkable and less drivable?
Doubling -- debaters cannot double. Judges -- Each school is responsible for bringing a MINIMUM of one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof (6 entries = 2 judges). Judges need to bring a laptop for scoring. We will score online through SpeechWire (instead of paper ballots). If you are bringing a lot of solo debaters, it would really help if you are able to bring extra judges (ideally 1:2 ratio)! Please share the Event Rules (link above) and Judging Instructions (Files for Download) with your judges in advance of the tournament. All coaches/judges should be prepared to show government-issued photo IDs at Registration.
Tips -- Please remember that in order to enter students and judges in the tournament, you must first collect email addresses from them, set up SpeechWire accounts for them, and remind each of them to activate their accounts. Participants cannot share the same email address. If you intend to record NSDA points, sync your students' NSDA and SpeechWire accounts prior to the tournament; this allows for auto posting of points--a huge time saver for you!
