Dates: 03/17 - 03/21

Name: Chaos Monday

Time: 10:01

Rank: 5

RFD: Tough Round

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the proud institution of Chaos Monday has been put up for sale. After investing heavily in a number of crypto rugpulls, including the Hawk Tuah coin, our investors desperately need liquidity so they can go all in on NVIDIA options. Potential buyers include The Dallas Mavericks, Scopely (the Saudi-owned company that just bought Pokémon Go), and The Black Book Depot.

Join us for one last ride of hybrid, ‘Last Chance NFA’ competition. The branding of Chaos Monday will never die, even if the spirit left us long ago.

Events & Modality

Chaos Monday is currently reviewing its events and modality to ensure we meet all federal and state laws and requirements. Out of an abundance of caution, our board of directors have asked us to avoid any reference of Double Entered Individuals at this tournament. Competitors cannot only have two events. They must either be single-entered or triple-entered.

All rounds except Rank Discussion will be judged asynchronously. All collegiate teams and students are invited to attend, but we recommend that competitors submit videos for events they are actively seeking an NFA qual.

All non-experimental events will be broken to a final round in a manner that allows for the maximum number of entrants to qualify for NFA. Novice divisions will be offered when applicable. Our tournament defines novices as a competitor that has not yet attended nationals.

Attire

As always, Chaos Monday is a ‘come as you are’ tournament. This can be your week to dry clean before Nationals. Save your suits for the White House.

Experimental Events

TBD: Competitors entered in this event will record three videos, with the rules of the event changing each round.

Rank Discussion: Competitors will be entered in a groupchat with no judge and decide as a collective on the ranks. The round will continue until all competitors agree on the ranks. If the competitors cannot agree on the ranks, all competitors will get a 5.

Original Shakespeare: I’m sure this has been explained to me before, but what were the rules to the 2007 NFA Experimental Event Original Shakespeare? I did a keyword search in the National Forensics Association journal but couldn’t find anything. I’m not even opposed to the event… it’s an out there concept! I just… how is it both original and Shakespeare? And they did this before AI? Since this event is now the same age as many novices, I think it deserves a resurgence! But I don’t know the rules, so competitors can either record a performance of their own Original Shakespeare, whatever that means to you; or film a video explaining what you think the rules of Original Shakespeare are. Judges and coaches who were around for Original Shakespeare, please tell me what it is, and feel free to lie a little bit if you want to. I won’t be able to tell the difference.

The Following Events Have Been Scrubbed From Our Website:

Counter Debate: This is a duo event. One individual will give a speech, while the other competitor will ‘Jim’ the camera and hold up paper signs from the audience to heckle the speaker instead of saying anything or taking any action or stance.

Artificial Interpretation: Competitors would be given a maximum of three prompt attempts to generate and perform the best story. This event has been cancelled due to concerns for the environment and the speech homewriting industry.

Roast Battle: Competitors will perform a pre-written roast. The roastee can be of the competitors choosing, including but not limited to: a politician, Drake, or a member of the NFA Hall of Fame. This event has been cancelled pending several open lawsuits.

Deal or No Deal Island: Competitors would spend the next two weeks playing an intricately crafted, social competition game with every episode ending with a game of Deal or No Deal. Despite there being two seasons of this real TV show existing, this event has been cancelled due to all speech competitors watching The Traitors instead.

Schedule:

Saturday, March 15th at 2pm: Does anyone want to come see Mickey 17 with me and maybe get Chili's afterwards? No pressure or anything.

Monday, March 17th at 11:59pm: Entries Due!

Tuesday, March 18th at 9pm CST: Video Links are Due!

Wednesday, March 19th at 8am: Preliminary Ballots Released

Thursday, March 20th at 8pm: Preliminary Ballots Due; Finals Released (if possible!)

Friday, March 21st: Results Posted!

Fees & Judging

Teams will have ‘covered’ their entries so long as at least one judge is entered. The team judge(s) will judge a number of rounds up to half of the number of team entries (rounded up, only including NFA-event entries, split amongst all judges if multiple)

If a team does not enter any judges, the cost will be $25 per entry.

Experimental entries are of no cost, and no judging obligation.

Our preference is to make this as much of a zero-cost tournament as possible. And thanks to our sponsor, FanDebateKings, we can do just that by allowing teams to ‘Parli’ their judge spots.

If a team decides to ‘Parli’ their judge spots, they will be entered in a sweepstakes to determine the number of rounds that their team will judge. The odds are as follows:

1% - Free Tournament! No rounds to judge!

7% - reduce the number of assigned judge rounds by 2

15% - reduce the number of assigned judge rounds by 1.

10% - no change in number of assigned judge rounds.

15% - increase the number of assigned rounds to judge by 1.

25% - increase the number of assigned rounds to judge by 2.

2% - If there is a free round, your team will judge it.

Entry Fees can be paid through Paypal, Zelle, Check, Discounts at Future Tournaments, or FanDebateKings freeplay.

Awards

We were going to write something about how the trade war made importing trophies impossible but… do online tournaments still do trophies? Or are we all over that? Your qualification is your trophy. Have fun in Detroit or Canada.
