This is a Middle/High School tournament at Fort Walton Beach High School, Fort Walton Beach, FL.
 
You are cordially invited to the Northwest Region Season Closer Tournament, to be held Saturday, May 10th, 2025 at Fort Walton Beach High School, 400 Hollywood Blvd. NW, Fort Walton Beach, Florida, 32548. This tournament will be live and in person!
***This tournament will NOT count as an official FCDI tournament towards coach or team stipends***
It is just a tournament hosted by the Regional Ambassador and other Local Coaches to close out the year and bring everyone together for one final event together!
 
This Northwest Region Seasonal Closing Tournament offers middle school, high school novice, and high school varsity competition. All schools are welcome to compete in this tournament.
 
There will be 4 rounds of competition in all events, except congress where there will be only 3.
    The tournament will begin at 8:00 a.m. Central time. We hope to finish awards by 4:30 p.m. but please be flexible regarding the end time of the event.
   Park on the East side of the Building, across from the football field and enter through the doors with the AUDITORIUM sign above it.

REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Midnight.
 
Please plan to arrive at Fort Walton Beach High School for check-in (opens at 8:00). If your students are competing in Extemp Debate or Extemp Speaking, prep will begin at 8:30AM.
 
EVENTS and DIVISIONS: We offer middle school, novice, and varsity divisions. If numbers allow, we will offer separate middle school and novice divisions. We reserve the right to combine divisions. If we combine divisions, we will offer a Middle School Champion Award in addition to the usual awards. "Varsity" is Year 2 of high school debate.
 
DOUBLE ENTRY IS ALLOWED IN THIS TOURNAMENT. Speech events only! LD, Congress, and Extemp Debate do not allow double entry.
 
EVENTS INCLUDE:
Debate Events- (1 judge per every 2 entries)
   Extemp Debate
   Lincoln Douglas Debate
   Public Forum
SpeechEvents- (1 judge per every 5 entries)
   Congressional Debate
   Declamation
   Prepared Prompt Speaking
   Extemp Speaking
   Dramatic Performance
   Duo Interpretation 
   Impromptu Speaking
   Program Oral Interpretation 
   Original Oratory
Congressional Debate- (1 judge per every 5 entries): Congress Judges will likely be working double duty in Speech events as well, but If you have a judge who prefers to judge Congress this will help our region develop specialized Judges for that event. 
 
Congress Specific Rules for the Seasonal Closer:
All students will be required to speak before moving onto the next bill- Except during Finals
Students have a hard stop of 90 minutes after the round begins- This is the Presiding Officer's responsibility to track and should be taken out of the rankings if they fail to do so.
Presiding officers should be given 2 speech scores, one after the first hour of competition, and one at the end of the 90 minutes. It is THEIR JOB to respectfully remind the judges to put in their scores and leave comments. 
Finals will restart the Docket.
 
Observers are allowed, but food will not be provided for them.

Lincoln Douglas Debate: Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.
 
Public Forum Debate: Resolved: Direct-to-consumer advertising for pharmaceutical products ought to be banned in the US.
   NOTE: Students will debate BOTH sides of the resolution. 
 
IMPROMPTU TOPIC AREAS: 
   Round 1: Nursery Rhymes
   Round 2: Memorial Day
   Round 3: Graduation       
    Finals: Album Covers (Picture Prompts)
 
EXTEMP TOPIC AREAS: 
   Round 1: US Legal & Constitutional Issues    
   Round 2: Societal Values & Ethical Issues    
   Round 3: International Conflict & Civil Unrest
    Finals: US Foreign Policy

CONGRESSIONAL LEGISLATION: Can be Found under "Files for Download"
 
JUDGES:  We will need your judges in order to run the tournament.
   The judge ratio for this tournament is 1 judge for every two debate entries; 1 judge for every 5 speech/interp/congress entries. Please bring parents, teachers, former students, etc.!
Missing Judges as of close of Registration on May 6th will result in either a penalty fee imposed on your team for coverage or your team being dropped from competition.
We don't have FCDI money to cover missing judges this time around! It would just be put on my school as a burden! Call me if you need help!

   Adults and coaches may judge any division.
   Qualified varsity (high schoolers with 2 years of experience) may judge the middle school and novice divisions. 
   Judges need to be trained. They may take the NSDA judge training course if they did not attend any judge training. 
   It is the affirmative duty of the coach to ensure that all judges (except students) must be approved as volunteers through their district’s volunteer system.
 
LUNCH: Meals will be provided for all students, coaches, and judges. But if there are allergens or dietary restrictions where Pizza will not be appropriate, please contact your host ahead of time!
 
CONCESSIONS: Concessions (pizza, snacks, drinks, etc.) will be available for purchase with cash only. Everything will be $1 each.
 
NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES PERMITTED.
 
COACHES: Coaches must be available for the duration of the tournament.
 
FEES: Costs for this tournament will include a $10 entry fee for each event ($15 for partner events). ***Example: If a student choses to double enter in two speech events they will owe a $20 entry fee!*** Cash and Checks will be accepted at Registration, but we will not take card!!
