We are so excited to invite you to the McNicol Middle School “Hawk Flights” Debate Tournament on October 5, 2019. Our school, team, and parents are excited to host all of you. We are hard at work to provide you with an amazing experience.
Registration on SpeechWire will be open until 5pm on Tuesday, October 1st.
Lunch will be provided for all competitors. Each competitor will receive pizza, chips, and a drink. There will be a separate meal provided for judges and coaches.
Events: We will offer outstanding competition in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Policy Debate, Congress, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Impromptu, Poetry, and Prose.
The top 6 of each event will be recognized at the awards ceremony after Round 4.
Rounds: There will be 4 rounds of competition across Speech and Debate. Congress will have 3 sessions.
Judges: You will need you to make sure to provide 1 judge for every 5 IE entries (including Congress) and 1 judge for every 3 debate entries, or any fraction thereof.
Entry fee: There are No Entry Fees
Safety & Security:
For PF, the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER topic will be used - Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative.
For LD, the NOVICE topic will be used in both September and October - Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.
For Policy Debate, the 2019-20 topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States. In addition, all Policy teams MUST use the Novice Policy Packet. The Novice Policy Packet can be accessed at http://www.debatecoaches.org/2018-2019-novice-packet
Extemp topic areas will be "Climate Change", "the US Government", "the Middle East" and "Technology".
Impromptu topic areas will be "Autumn", "Political Cartoons", "Movie Quotes", and "Sports".
Congress will use the October MAST Legislation. If a chamber finishes debating all 4 pieces of legislation, they will move on to the November MAST legislation. Congress legislation for the fall semester was emailed to all coaches. It is also accessible electronically here under the "Files for Download" section. The fall legislation packet has designations for which bills will be debated in which months, with 4 bills per month.
